This half day shore trip designed for cruise ship passengers is a short excursion to the important sights of the island.
The tour to the Achillion Palace, located in Gastouri, a village that is reached by a route through olive, orange and lemon groves. The garden is dominated by huge sculptures of the God Achilles and is planted with exotic and fragrant plants and trees. The garden, the palace and its grounds are decorated with sculptures and paintings that depict the heroic feats of Achilles. The most iconic sculpture is the Wounded Achilles.
The private tour continues Kanoni with a stop to take in the view of Mouse Island, known also as Pontikonisi. The small islet in the Halkiopoulos Lagoon has an 11th century Byzantine chapel that is only open for visitors on August 6th. Legend says that Mouse Island was once the ship that helped Ulysses, the hero of Homer’s Odyssey, return to Ithaca. This displeased Poseidon, God of the Seas, who turned the ship to stone as it entered the port, thus creating the islet. For visitors arriving by aeroplane this is their first view of Corfu.
The final stop of the tour is Corfu Old Town. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this ancient city has so much to offer its visitors. The cobbled streets are called ‘Kantounia’ and wind through the old town of Corfu. Around each corner another will be a beautiful building or a stunning view; all amazing photo opportunities to take a piece of Corfu home.
