The cosmopolitan capital of Corfu has been described as Venice and Naples, a touch of France and more than a dash of England, apart of course from being Greek.
Ancient churches, Venetian buildings, the Liston Arcade, Esplanade, excellent restaurants and the cricket pitch all go to make up one of Europe’s most interesting cities. In the Old Town of Corfu, with its cobbled, winding streets called kantounia, a delight and discovery is around every corner. In 2007 it was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
Corfu Town has something for everyone. There are literally hundreds of shops and restaurants to choose from. Chic, designer boutiques and little art shops tucked away in the maze of narrow streets and alleyways. Restaurants and tavernas serving every type of food and the aromas wafting around town tempt you to stop and eat.
Any café on the Liston is a must for people watchers. Built by the French, it is identical to the Rue de Rivoli in Paris. Stop here for a coffee or enjoy the local ginger beer. Ginger beer was introduced to the island by the British, who also introduced playing cricket. Corfu has eleven cricket teams and the cricket pitch is opposite the Liston. From here you can also enjoy a view of the Old Fortress.
The Church of St. Spyridon, home to the island's patron saint, is located just behind the Liston. The church is impressive and worth visiting. If you are lucky the silver coffin with the remains of St. Spyridon will be open and you can see the Saint who saved the island many times. It is considered good luck to kiss his red satin slipper.
