Municipal Art Gallery of Corfu
Since the 19th century Corfu has produced many important figures in the field of fine arts. Housed in the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, the Municipal Art Gallery began operation in 1978. The gallery became a recognised public institution in 1991 in an effort to make its, mainly donated, works more widely known. Besides the permanent and temporary exhibitions, lectures, art history courses, educational programs and concerts are also organised there.
Most of the works in the gallery are by 19th century local artists. Amongst the most important being the Samartzis Collection, 42 works, Aglaia Pappa Collection, 23 works, Phillip Makotsi Collection, 12 works and while two more works were donated by Nikolas Ventouras. The Corfiot artists of note include Pavlos Prosalentis Snr, the founder of the first School of Fine Arts in Corfu, H. Pachis, A. Giallinas, S.Skarvelis, S. Prosalentis, M. Damaskinos, V. Bokatsiampis, G. Samartzis and the painters and sculptors L. Kogevinas and N. Ventouras.
The tour continues with a short drive into centre of Corfu Town where you will have some free time to visit the Old Town, where the narrow, cobbled streets are known as Kantounia, the Espianada and the cricket ground. You can stroll along the Liston arcades, visit one of the Fortresses or the old Church of Saint Spyridon, with its priceless collection of icons and gifts offered to the Patron Saint of Corfu.
