This private day trip from Corfu to Meteora is the perfect opportunity to experience a magnificent natural phenomenon. One must be prepared that this one day trip is more than just a visiting an exquisite landscape, for some it is a pilgrimage to an ancient and holy place.

Kalambaka is in a stunning location and was raised to the ground during World War II, so is very recent in construction. The town stands sentry to the approach to Meteora and is surrounded by stunning rock formations. The sandstone rocks appear to have been dropped from the sky.

In the 9th century, it is thought that the first inhabitants of this area hermits and as early as the 11th century monks inhabited the mountains and started to build their monasteries on the rocks so that they could be closer to God. All materials for the buildings were winched up in baskets a practice that the monks continued for their supplies until the 1920s. Now there are roads, pathways and steps that connect the monasteries to the outside world.

By the 15th century twenty four monasteries had been built in this labour intensive way. Today there are just six with only four still housing religious orders.

On this private excursion two monasteries are visited. They are representative of a unique artistic and architectural achievement and they are the 2nd largest monastic pilgrimage after Mount Athos.
